Hey! I’m Heather.
Thanks for jumping in with me here at Leading From the Deep End.
I’m a low-maintenance, generally happy kind of gal who loves a new challenge. My husband (of almost 20 years!) and 2 boys have learned to accept that they will rarely eat the same recipe twice (sometimes that makes them really glad…). My passport has a collection of stamps from five continents; we don’t like to vacation the same place twice. And if a situation arises that calls for action, you’re probably not going to find me on the sidelines watching.
I grew up all over the United States with parents who were entrepreneurs and eventually overseas missionaries. I learned at an early age how to adapt to new people and situations. After high school I followed a long-time dream by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing that I utilized for almost 15 years.
Around 17 years ago, what began as a “yes” to helping in a 3 year old classroom ended up the start of a new trajectory of my life. That plan included building and leading a preschool ministry over 2 locations, and eventually overseeing the entire kids’ ministry at the broadcast location of Freedom Church in Acworth, Georgia. Today I am the Leadership Development Director for Freedom Church, as well as a consultant for Ministry Architects. For a long time, I was stuck believing that I had no right to lead due to lack of formal education and training. But I’m learning every day that God has already equipped me to do what He has given me a passion for.
I believe that people have far more potential than they may ever realize on their own. Calling out that potential is what brings a smile to my face and energizes me.
Some of you reading this page have been groomed toward leadership for years. However, this blog is a glimpse of the deep end – finding yourself plunged into leadership – maybe because you chose to jump in, maybe because someone else saw the potential in you and pushed you in. Regardless of how you got here, you need to know that you’re not alone!
Join me as I journey through the highs and lows of being in over my head as I lead a stellar group of volunteers. I typically blog once a week, and I love to share little tidbits on social media that have made me stop and think. I would love to be a part of your journey! Please send me a note at any time to firstname.lastname@example.org. The best way to keep in touch with me is to sign up for free email updates by entering your email address to the right.
